The morning arrival at the centre continues to demonstrate the pupils’ ability to self-regulate. It’s incredible to see how they organise themselves, both individually and as a group, to carry out their little projects.
In any case, word seems to have got around, and it takes only a few minutes before they’re calling for my attention so I can tell them as many stories as possible. I draw on all my resources to ensure the language barrier remains as minimal as possible.
Meanwhile, the teaching staff are practising a new routine with a touch of yoga to perform later on. It is very well received by the pupils, so much so that they ask to repeat it with smiles on their faces.
Back in class, the first objective is to bring the story to life using tempera paints, brushes and a story narrated by the teacher. It’s a joy to see how each child, in their own style, depicts the story. The floor is covered in paint; there’s no doubt the objective has been achieved perfectly.
Afterwards, encouraged by Parissa, we held a psychomotor skills session and, through an exchange of ideas, discussed the aspects to observe, what the pupils are telling us through their actions, and how we can foster that freedom of movement and thought... I notice that the teachers are listening attentively; it is in our nature to continually seek to expand our knowledge with the aim of providing the most appropriate response possible to those in our care.
The final day brings with it a bittersweet feeling. Just when we’re feeling most at ease, it’s time to say goodbye. But not before spending a good part of the morning having breakfast together and dancing to music as a group. We also take a moment to relax so we can enter the classroom feeling emotionally balanced.
Today, we’re working on spatial awareness, both of objects and our own bodies. We use a variety of materials: paper and felt-tip pens, pieces, hoops, templates, arrows… everything is done in a playful way that gives the pupils the chance to experience it for themselves.
Sadly, it’s time to say goodbye. Our words are accompanied by hugs, a sign that the time we’ve spent together has been meaningful and will remain in our memories. Goodbyes like this are always bittersweet, so let’s say farewell with an... arrivederci!!
